Tepotzlan Mexico: April 2005

The elegant young woman politely thanked the taxi driver in Spanish as he dropped her off at the entrance to the market in Tepotzlan. She was dressed casually in creams slacks and a dark green blouse which complimented her unusually striking green eyes and raven black hair, cropped short to frame her flawless face.

She hesitantly glanced around the bustling market place, memories flitting in and out of her head of a time that seemed long past, when she was careless and rebellious, and the world seemed a much simpler place, defined only by her childish needs and a indulgent tug-of-war with her domineering father.

She walked slowly, carefully observing everyone around her, and inwardly grimaced at the fact that this was a hell of way to spend your 25th birthday - returning to an old memory on a wild goose chase based on a marijuana-induced hallucination - she would laugh hysterically if she was not as desperate as she was.

For the hundredth time, she thumbed through her worn travel journal, and skipping past inane travellogs of visits to Peru, Africa and Europe, she kept focusing on the time in Mexico, and in particular the paragraph written down in semi-jest so long ago...

"As he sleeps the darkness falls,
Only you can save them, when he calls.
Come back to us, on though`s quarter´s birth
Follow her monster, it is full of mirth
When she shivers, though will see,
Further answers onto thee..."

She had been over this so many times with Rico and Heather, and still she could not know what it all meant. All they had been able to make of the poem was that she was to return to Tepotzlan on her 25th birthday, and that the innocuous looking animal had somehow accurately predicted that her father would fall into a mysterious coma and would leave her with a massive responsibility that she was completely unprepared for... And now here she was, looking for some monster to follow to... what?

She was so so engrossed in her own thoughts that she almost bumped into the person in front of her. She mumbled a hasty "Lo siento",looked up to see one of the most attractive men she had ever seen, a curly blond giant wearing a bandana and with a backpack slung over his shoulder. He obviously recognized her as another American, in the way gringos did in Mexico, and simply shrugged in a friendly way.
"No problem. The market is busy..."
And he turned away to chat away with his companion, an athletic girl attractive angular features who was looking at a pair of earrings. She was wearing a simple tank top that showed off her flawless midriff, and Amy was idly jealous, even though she knew her fuller body was very attractive, she would never be comfortable wearing THAT.

The thought froze as the girl turned around to check the earrings in the mirror of the stall. On the right side of her back was a pretty unusual tattoo - a laughing frog-like goblin with his hands raised in the air, as if to support her tank top. Her monster...

"Follow her monster, it is full of mirth
When she shivers, though will see,
Further answers onto thee..."

She kept her distance as she quietly followed them from stall to stall, and they finally ducked into a huge shop that proclaimed all kind of mystic answers, from palm to tarot readings and astral projection literature. Inside, there were literally thousands of different stones on display claiming mystical powers. It was also a significantly cooler than the outside market, thanks to a clearly efficient air conditioner. The girl with the tattoo, shivered, and put on the sweater that she had kept round her waist...

Jamie could not help but have an instinctive shiver as well. The couple finished their window shopping, bought some stones, and left the shop. She was about to follow, when her path was blocked by a leathery faced Indian woman dressed in the colourful local apparrel. Her eyes were huge brown irises though, and she looked at Jamie in a knowing way.

"We have been waiting for you, Jamie Morales. Please come this way..."

And she led the way through a gateway with a sign that said: "Ozzy Kerkhoff - readings and answers".

.....

It was a dimly lit room, and there was a particularly strange character sitting... no actually, he was reclining in a Laz-e-Boy. He appeared to be studying a half-eaten apple. His eyes turned to her... and she was momentarily taken aback. He had one glass eye, the pupil of which was perpertually looking slightly down, but the other eye was crystal clear and a deep compelling green. He was balding but with a silver goatie, his entire countenance was a bit of a Willie Nelson throwback, all retired hippy...

He spoke, and his voice fitted his appearance... a drawling mid-States accent, a bit hoarse but with a sense of authority: "Sit down over here..." and he gestured her to a futon to his right.

Jamie was hesitant. Before she could move or even speak, however, he sat up quickly, the luxury chair creaking into position, and barked at her. Barked!

"Young lady, you and I both know why you are here. We both know you got a helluva problem, and we both know for whatever reason you have run out of solutions to that problem, and you are on what you think is a wild goose chase. What only I know, however, is that you will find the answers with me, but only if you have some courage, keep on going and sit your ass down right now!!!" The last bit was maybe a bit forceful, but he had the benefit of being dead on, so she sat down.

He went on, absent-mindedly starting to stoke a pipe: "So let´s be clear about the details, just so you know you ain´t wastin´your precious time on some voodoo pothead out here who is just wantin´ to take you for a ride."

"My spirit guide... George, I call him, never can pronounce the name he likes ta use, he used to be a holy man out in Iceland. Cool dude and full of wisdom... oh, I see I´m getting a blank. Ok, let me backtrack about George, and start in on spirit guides. These folks are part of the energy that surrounds all of us... the place we go when we die, like heaven, hell or whatever mankind plan to lable it. Fact is, some folks are just way more aware than others of the way all this works when they die, and they get to come back... yeah, they get to come back... as whatever or whoever they want, or sometimes they choose to hang around in the energy field for a coupla hundred.... or thousand... years and do some good... or bad shit... while they are out there, guess depends on who they are working for. But that´s a whole different discussion.

"Fact is, when I lost my one good eye in a hunting accident, I almost also lost my life, but George came to me right at the end ya see, when you are about to step through that white light and all, and spoiled the party... told me I needed to come tell people shit that will help them through life, and he jerked me back. So here I am, 10 years later, telling people shit. It´s good shit however, helps them how to figure out what to do next. Ya see, George can see the future... or more accurately, he´s got a good handle on all the possible futures. He tells me, I tell you, that´s the way it works. Sometimes he likes to break the rules... George is naughty that way... and talk to people through other means, like animals... but I guess you already knew that!"

Jamie had spent enough time in hippy meditation centres (where she had never managed to talk to any George´s) to appreciate the theory he was putting forward, but her rational mind still objected. Her intuitive mind accepted what she was hearing, however, and she forged on.

"Ok then... Ozzy..." then name was not spiritual at all, but then neither was George, "please help George help me. As you know, my father is very ill, and I am simply here to save him."

"Ah, but it isn´t simple at all!", Ozzy proclaimed. "Your father is a rich and powerful man, and he was struck down by a rich and powerful adversary, with intentions that will become know to you should you take the time to dig deeper than the surface. Suffice it to say, his current condition... which looks to be a coma, but is in fact a mystical trance, will be permanent unless you take great care to follow to the letter the advice I am about to give you."

Jamie shifted uncomfortably in her chair: "I have uncovered some things that my ex-husband is doing after he took over, which alarms me greatly. You cannot mean that he is responsible..."

"Ah, but he is! He is far more than you are aware of, and his abilities are not to the betterment of others. Know your enemy Jamie..." and Ozzie paused.

He suddenly put between them three stones. "This is what you need to do… you need to go to a website called www.oraclechakra.com... And do some research on the chakras. I am not goin to waste our time on the details, you can figure it out for yourself."

Ozzie leaned forward. "These three stones are yours to give. You have to find three others, and the seventh… well that one will find you."

Jamie was immensely confused. "I don´t know what you are talking about! Who do I give the stones to, and for what purpose?"

Ozzie shook his head, and his eyes glazed over a little bit.
"More than this I cannot say…
With Seven Stones he will find day
\nSin in all but feat it not \nRedemption comes and hits the spot" \n \nMore fucking rhymes. After sitting there a few minutes, Jamie realized that this meeting was over as Ozzie was just staring into space. She wrote down what he had said at the end, and grabbed the three stones… all of the smaller than marbles. She did not know much about stones or chakras, but she was damn well going to find out… \n\n \n \nHurtling past the main terminal building, they went to what appeared to be the hangars… Rico abruptly slammed on the brakes and they skidded to a halt. "No time for formalities bro, we gotta jump this fence and make a run for it!" And they duly vaulted the small fence separating them from the tarmac just as a small jet started to taxi out of the closest hanger. \n\n \nThe hatch popped open, and they jumped in just as the Mini Cooper burst through the fence and started at them. \n \n",1]

Tepotzlan Mexico: September 2000

"As he sleeps the darkness falls,
Only you can save them, when he calls.
Come back to us, on day of birth,
Follow her monster, it is full of mirth.
When she shivers, though will see
Further answers onto thee..."

The mystical mountain of Tepotzlan was only visible in patches through the scattered morning clouds as the bus stopped in the bustling market. A mixed bag of local Mexicans out to do some Sunday shopping, visiters from nearby Mexico City and assorted gringos spilled out of the bus...

The group of backpackers stood out amongst the others, as much for their clearly gringo appearances as for their disparate physicality...

The leader was clearly the good looking Latin girl with the unusually piercing green eyes, who managed to look attractive even with the odd purple highlights running through her obviously unwashed mane of raven black hair. She turned to her companions:
"Man my head hurts. That was some party last night... The tequila here is much better than the stuff they export to the States, but it still give me a hell of hangover...! A cup of Coffee before we get up there?"
The tall willowy blonde in the tye-dyed frock and the beads in her hair laughed throatily...
"Don`t do the crime if you can`t do the time, Jamie. Besides, it will probably rain soon, we should get up to the temple before then. We`ll grab some coffee once we get down..."
The naughty-looking hombre with a medium build who could easily have been mistaken for a local if not for his t-shirt proclaiming that he had been at AC-DC`s sell-out concert in Buenos Aires did not take off his sunglasses, but grunted his two cents: "Yep, and bear in mind that we have some pretty good shit left over from Zipolite Beach, which is just waiting to add to the experience of an ancient Aztec temple on a mountaintop... I agree with Heather, let`s go!"

So the three companions started their trek up the small mountain, the steep path starting after a small walk through the local market that sold all kinds of local curios, fruits and veggies as well as local foods. A mystic air permeated everywhere, and all kinds of fruitcakes were selling power crystals, offering to do tarot card readings and the like...

They duly arrived at the summit an hour later, after a semi-arduous climb through some beautiful tropical jungle. At the top of the mountain is an ancient Aztec temple, but it could more accurately be described as a delapitated ruin. Still, the guidebooks indicate that some energy could be had, and after all, it was as good a spot as any to smoke some high quality weed from the State of Oaxaca...

As Rico lit up, the two girls amused themselves by playing with the local ferret-like animals called Tejones who clamoured around for scraps of food, and were quite happy with the M&M`s Heather threw their way. In short order, they were all in that very special happy place where everything took on a fuzzy slowness, and conversation slowed to a trickle...

Suddenly, Jamie felt a tug at her left shirtsleeve. She was seated with her back to the temple, with Rico and Heather happily observing the beautiful view of Tepotzlan down below and sharing the last bits of the joint...

She glanced down, and was surprised to see one of the Tejones tugging at her sleeve. She was about to shoo it away, when it started speaking to her!

"As he sleeps the darkness falls,
Only though can save them, when he calls..."

She blinked disbelievingly! This was some pretty good shit... but the Tejone continued.

"Come back to us, on though`s quarter´s birth
Follow her monster, it is full of mirth
When she shivers, though will see,
Further answers onto thee..."

And the Tejone looked at her... calmly, inquisitively, as if making sure she had heard... and then scurried off.

Dazed, she turned to her friends. She was about to comment on this pretty wild side trip, when Rico spoke up...
"Profound stuff. Chipmunks that speak Shakespearian English... I LOVE IT!"

Later, over dinner, they all had a giggle at the shared hallucination, but Jamie took care to write down the words that they had all clearly heard in her journal. Just another one of Big Daddy Ganja`s many pleasures, she was sure...

The next day they traveled further north to Mexico City and their flight back to their home countries, and all but forgot about Tepotzlan.
